Typical Procedure for the Initial and Follow-Up Medication Management
Sessions |
|
The individual's psychotherapist is asked to complete and submit a Psychotherapist Referral Form as soon as possible. At the first session, a complete history is taken from the patient and/or family members, as appropriate. Blood pressure and pulse are usually taken and I would determine if any blood tests would be required at that time. For adolescent patients, I offer time alone in the session, time alone with the parent, then time together to discuss some conclusions and to suggest directions that we might take. After consents are obtained, additional information is gathered from the referring therapist, family members, school contacts, medical specialists and primary care physicians, as needed. Medication teaching is provided and educational flyers specific to the medication are available for taking home. In addition, I provide copies of the forms that I ask be signed. These include a consent to contact others, informed consent related to the use of medication and basic education pointers that are important to review prior to starting medication. It is my policy to have patients come to the office for prescription renewals and to schedule office visits on a regular basis. |
