Title: Neurodevelopment in the Teen Brain: Emotional and Behavioral
Growth
Description: There is a great deal to be hopeful about when kids go into
“that difficult stage” but parents, teachers, and adults feel helpless,
alone and bereft of effective strategies to cope with teens at these
time. Having some knowledge of neurodevelopment allows adults to gain
insight into shifts happening on the neuronal and hormonal level in the
developing brain. This essential information is helpful in gaining an
understanding of how the most difficult behaviors (such as distortion,
defiance, self absorption, withdrawal from the family, impulsivity, poor
decision making, etc.) may have a hard wire component.
Target Audience:
School Administration, school nurses, school psychologists, guidance
department and special education staff
Title: Kids on Medications: What Schools Need to Know Description: In this discussion, Kathy helps identify issues associated with teaching and interacting with children taking psychotropic medications while in school. The controversies of ‘medicating’ or ‘not-medicating’ kids are reviewed as well as how to keep kids safe in the era of ‘black box warnings’. Concerns about access to appropriate services and interventions with kid and families will be discussed. What really happens in the prescribing relationship is reviewed as well as strategic options when developing policies to deal with kids on medication while in school. Target Audience: School Administration, school nurses, school psychologists, guidance department and special education staff Title: Kids on Medications: Psychiatric Medications Description: In this talk, Kathy speaks specifically about the psychiatric medicines used in kids today, common combinations, side effects and adverse reactions. Kathy will discuss how the decision to medicate is as important as the action of medicating children. Families bring well meaning behaviors, dysfunctional behaviors, past experiences, hearsay, beliefs, fears, fantasies and a limited knowledge of alternatives to the prescribing relationship. Best practices involve careful consideration of these realities as part of the medication treatment plan. Target Audience: School Administration, school nurses, school psychologists, guidance department and special education staff Title: Talking to Kids About Drug Use When they are Taking Psychiatric Medications Description: We wish that we could have kids take prescribed medications as they are directed but it is fantasy to think that kids do exactly as they are told when taking medicine. The reality is kids experiment, bend to peer pressure or self medicate even while they are taking psychiatric medications. Providers respond to this challenge in a variety of ways – they encourage dishonesty and manipulation if too rigid and risk complacency if too passive. What to do? Education about risks, interactions and how to weigh decisions provides an opportunity to engage them actively in making healthier decisions. Target Audience: School nurses (School Administration, school psychologists, guidance department, and special education staff) Title: Emerging Alternatives to Medicating Kids: The Role of Evidence Based Treatment Description: Kids and families with problems
have an arduous task ahead – how to secure the most appropriate treatment
in a culture of quick-fix solutions. Thoughtful families want more
choices and good information. In this discussion, recent research is
discussed by leading psychologist, Dr. Michael Goldberg about the
emerging field of evidence based practice. Kathy Andolina will speak
about the realities of combining treatment approaches in common disorders
such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc. Click here for more information about Kathy Andolina Click here for information about workshops and consultation provided by other CFPS staff |
