HEALTH & BEHAVIOR CODES

Non-physician behavioral health providers now have a more accurate way of billing for services provided to patients with a medical diagnosis. The advent of six new reimbursement codes, called Health & Behavior Codes, under the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system dramatically changes billing for behavioral medicine services.

Until now, almost all intervention codes used by non-physician behavioral health providers involved psychotherapy and required a psychiatric diagnosis. In contrast, health and behavior assessment and intervention services focus on patients whose primary diagnosis is physical in nature.

Proper use of these codes may:

  • Significantly increase reimbursement
  • Decreased managed care burdens
  • Permit provision of treatment in more flexible time units (e.g., 45, 75 or 90 minutes)

Dr. Goldberg offers a presentation & consultation that will help you better understand:

  • how to use these codes
  • which payers allow these codes
  • how to seek contracts
  • how to obtain authorizations
  • how to submit claims
