PARENTS
SUPPORT GROUP
For parents of younger children with special needs.
Program Goals
·
Expand your support network with like-minded parents
facing similar challenges
·
Improve your ability to advocate effectively for your
child’s educational, social, and emotional needs
·
Find your voice in dealing with challenging spouses,
family members, neighbors, and friends
·
Learn and share parenting techniques that could make a
real difference in your child’s life
Basic Premise
Parenting is difficult in the best of circumstances, but
it is particularly challenging to parent a child with a unique
developmental path. Tasks like planning a play-date, finding an
appropriate camp, or even taking a trip to the grocery store hold extra
challenges. Whatever challenges you face, it is easier to face them
with the support of a like-minded community.
Appropriate
Participants
This support program is for parents or primary guardians
of children (ages 4-11) with issues which set them significantly apart
from their peers. These issues include (but are not limited to) ADHD,
Asperger’s, Anxiety, and explosive or
erratic mood. Participants are expected to have had, or be currently
working with a behavioral specialist to address their child’s needs.
Parents who have participated in Child & Family Psychological Services’
Oppositional Defiant Behavior training program, or whose child is
currently enrolled in a school-based special needs program are also
welcome to participate.
Program
Duration
The program meets once a month for 60 minutes.
Participants are expected to commit to a minimum of three consecutive
sessions.
