Selective Mutism (formerly called Elective Mutism) is a psychiatric disorder that is characterized by consistent failure to speak in SELECT social settings in which there is an expectation to speak; such as school.

Does your child have these characteristics?
1) Does not speak in certain places; such as school or other social events?
2) But, can speak normally in other settings; such as in their home or in places where they are comfortable and relaxed?
3) Child's inability to speak interferes with their ability to function in educational and/or social settings?
4) Mutism has persisted for at least one month?

A child with Selective Mutism is typically MUTE due to ANXIETY, not Mental retardation, not defiance nor manipulation. These children are so anxious, they cannot speak. The current consensus among the experts is that selective mutism is related to biological mediated temperamental factors that predispose a child to anxiety.

The treatment research on selective mutism is limited. However the experts agree that most evidence exists for cognitive behavioral psychotherapies and medication treatment.  Cognitive-behavioral treatments that focus on decreasing the child's anxiety by modifying their thinking and behavior are generally effective without the use of medication.  However, medication can be used when the problems are severe, cognitive behavioral therapy alone has not been effective, or it is not available.

Drs. Lyons and Goldberg provide cognitive behavioral treatment to children with selective mutism. Kirk Lum, M.D. is available for medication treatment when necessary.
