Our educational specialist will work with the parents and child to identify individual areas of challenge and design a personalized program. This program may cover strategies to develop stronger organizational skills including:

› Organizing and planning assignments including essays, reports, projects, etc.

› Time management including daily, weekly, and monthly scheduling

  › Study space planning

  › Notebook and note-taking organization

  › Preparing for tests

  › Test taking strategies

  › General Study Skills

Academic/Homework Support Program
Many students need morel support and direct instruction than they receive in school.  Our educational specialist works in small groups or one-to-one with students on homework assignments, preparing for tests and on other academic work with which they need assistance. Within the context of their academic assignments, students work on skills such as following directions, effective reading of a textbook and strategies for organizing their time and materials.  This extra support helps students who have difficulty organizing and planning, paying attention or completing assignments independently.

Our primary goals are:

to increase students' independence and self-esteem by directly teaching appropriate  learning strategies
to help students transfer and apply these skills to their everyday school situations
to teach students to effectively monitor their own learning
to assist students in completing their own tasks and assignments

Individualized Reading Instruction

Our educational specialist uses a phonics-based approach (decoding/encoding) for direct, individualized reading, spelling and writing instruction. The programs are designed to increase a student's current skill in reading and spelling to a mastery level.  The ultimate goal is for students to independently apply these skills to their academic studies.

This method is generally designed for students who:

Find it difficult to read isolated words

Often guess at words from context
 ›
Have reading disabilities that cause them to reverse, substitute, add, invert or omit letters
  Are poor spellers
