Sylvia has a particular interest in attachment and trauma, but enjoys working with more general populations as well. She has an array of clinical experiences, working closely with both adolescents and adults in inpatient psychiatric hospital settings, with individuals in drug detoxification and intensive outpatient programs, and with youth and their families in a juvenile court clinic. She has also worked with individuals diagnosed with a variety of mental illnesses who live semi-independently in the community. Though Sylvia gravitates towards cognitive-behavioral practice, she finds value in veering away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to therapy. She strongly believes that each individual contributes their own experiences and life history to the sessions which should not be ignored, but rather incorporated into the healing process. As such, Sylvia also values the humanistic approach to therapy which places a particular focus on empowering the individual, rather than a focus on simply treating symptoms.
Sylvia Catania, MA, is currently in her fourth year of her clinical psychology doctoral program (PsyD) at William James College (Newton, MA). She graduated with a BA in psychology from Simmons University (formerly Simmons College) in Boston, MA.
